Cars and boat trailers parked across public reserves and side roads have got the Howick Local Board working with Auckland Transport on plans for a multi-level carpark and a new passenger terminal at Half Moon Bay.
The busy marine hub serves Waiheke Island with SeaLink vehicular ferries, plus up to 700 city commuters using Fullers ferries as well as recreational boaties using the free launching facilities.
Howick Local Board member Steve Udy is on the stakeholder group that has worked with Auckland Transport and architects to come up with the plans which should be going out for public consultation in April and May.
Mr Udy says the situation is chaotic, especially at weekends.
"The problem is it's a limited space and an increasing population. Until we can make the space bigger we have to look at ways of rationing it."
Mr Udy says people park for days at a time in free carparks and on verges, yellow lines and the surrounding Argo Drive, Compass Rd and Takutai Ave.
He says Half Moon Bay is the only free boat ramp in Auckland and questions whether introducing a boat launching fee would reduce volume.
SeaLink general manager Todd Bolton says there have been a number of meetings over the last year to present different options for a new ferry terminal development at Half Moon Bay with "one or two preferences put in place".
He says the council will now be involved to get costs before the consenting processes get under way.
"It's pretty exciting," he says.
Construction is expected to begin in June next year and is likely to take several years.
