Au Kam San, Legislative Assembly member-Macau, accuses the ferry operator of Shun Tak of monopolizing the service between Macau and Hong Kong, resulting in unreasonably high fares.
n a written enquiry, Au said that after the closing of Macao Dragon and the purchase of New World First Ferry Services by Shun Tak, the passenger sea-lane between the two cities is virtually monopolized by Shun Tak. As a result, he says the operator can impose all kinds of fees on passengers, such as night time and holiday sub-charges. He asked if the government has planed to end this virtual monopoly by Shun Tak so that consumers have more choice and do not have to shoulder the unreasonable sub-charges. Au also wanted to know if the administration had an mechanism for regulating the sub-charges, and the operator’s reasons for imposing the extra charges, asking if night time and holiday ferries have higher operation costs. He also mentioned that according to recent reports by Hong Kong media, the HK Chief Executive, Tsang Yam Kuen, had travelled to and from Macau on a private luxury yacht at an unreasonably cheap price. Chan questioned if the report is substantial, it would amount to an illegal operation of paid ferry services to and from Macau; and if the Macau authority will investigate the case and prosecute the law-breaker.
