President Barack Obama sent his 2013 budget to Congress Monday. One section could bring more than a billion dollars to Marinette Marine.
The Pentagon says the president's budget request includes funds for new warships, including two littoral combat ships from Marinette Marine.
The budget request is welcome news for the entire city. Marinette is already reaping the benefits of government contracts.
"We would definitely thrive because of that," John LaPlant, owner of Blue Bike Burrito said.
Marinette Marine workers make up a substantial part of his regular lunch crowd.
With the addition of a thousand-plus jobs at the shipbuilder, it's no wonder they've been selling at least ten percent more of their famous burritos.
Lockheed Martin, the prime contract for Marinette Marine's shipbuilding operation, says at the company's current rate of building two ships a year, 40 to 50 jobs are added each month.
"In Marinette, if you come down 41, as you come into Marinette from Green Bay and look toward Peshtigo, all you see is almost a train or bumper-to-bumper lights at 6:30 in the morning," Mayor Robert Harbick said.
One local Realtor we spoke with said the shipbuilding boom has provided a nice boost to the area's housing market.
"We have seen our rental market take a rise as far as rental monthly fees that they pay, but it does help our real estate market in general," Francine Kitkowski of Place Perfect Realty said.
"This will be our fifth winter open, and this was definitely our busiest winter to date," LaPlant said.
