Where the heck is that ferry? Now you can check the Web to find out.
Washington State Ferries has upgraded its online VesselWatch feature to show the estimated time of arrival for vessels throughout the system. The new feature bases its calculations on the ferry's location, departure terminal and destination, and by comparing GPS and historical data to the record of similar vessels at similar locations along the same route, the ferry system reports.
Weather and marine conditions also are factored in.
VesselWatch already shows on a real-time map where ferries are in their routes. Customers can click on any of several little, green icons and a display bubble pops up with information about the boat. Riders also can find each vessel's scheduled departure, actual departure and the estimated time of arrival below the VesselWatch map.
In other news, the ferry system will switch to winter sailing schedules on Jan. 1. Several routes, including Seattle/Bainbridge Island, Mukilteo/Clinton and Point Defiance/Tahlequah, will be on holiday schedule on Dec. 26, the ferry system reports.
