Water Taxi Looks To Expand Ferry Service With More Brooklyn Stops October 15, 2007
East River ferry service could soon be expanding in Brooklyn, as the city looks to give residents more transit options.
New York Water Taxi says it has been talking with several developers about adding stops along the North Brooklyn waterfront, specifically in Greenpoint and Williamsburg. The city is currently reviewing proposals for extra service.
The Water Taxi already stops at Schaefer Landing in South Williamsburg. The company's president says while the water taxi costs more, it has several advantages over the subway.
"The opportunity to take the water is A: mentally more pleasant and B: physically beautiful – you see the view,” said Tom Fox, president of New York Water Taxi. “We aren't crowded and we don't have to worry about slowdowns. There's no traffic on the river."
Ferry officials say subsidies from developers have been key in helping them compete with mass transit.
