Alameda's ferry service topic of public meetings
Discussions today, next week to hash out takeover by the S.F. Bay Area Water Transit Agency

ALAMEDA — Residents and commuters will have a chance today to let the city know how they feel about a plan to hand over control of ferry service to a regional transit agency.
The Island has four boats for its Alameda Harbor Bay and Alameda/Oakland ferry services. The Harbor Bay operation offers morning and afternoon weekday service between Bay Farm Island and the San Francisco Ferry Building, and the Alameda/Oakland line travels from Oakland's Jack London Square to San Francisco's Pier 39, with stops at Alameda's Main Street and the San Francisco Ferry Building.
San Francisco Bay Area Water Transit Authority was created by the state Legislature in 1999 to develop a comprehensive water transit system across the Bay. It was established to add new routes and new environmentally safe vessels.
Cities around the Bay, including Alameda, will see some route expansion and new boats, regardless of who administers the existing services, said Ernest Sanchez, Alameda ferry manager.
A second public hearing will take place Wednesday for public comment on the plan.
Today's meeting is from 7:15 to 8:15 p.m. at the Community Harbor Bay Isle Homeowners Association, 3195 Mecartney Road.
Wednesday's meeting will be at 7:15 p.m. at City Hall West, 950 West Mall Square, Room 140.
