Stormy weather cancels Superferry trial run to Maui

WAILUKU >> The Oahu-Maui trial run of the Hawaii Superferry was canceled for today because of stormy weather, state transportation spokesman Scott Ishikawa said. Ishikawa said there were storm surges in Kahului Harbor on Maui. Two lines holding a barge to the pier to be used by the Superferry broke yesterday during stormy weather, Ishikawa said.
One of the lines connecting a cruise ship to another pier in the harbor also snapped, he said.
Ishikawa said with its mouth facing north, Kahului Harbor is vulnerable to large winter swells.
“It’s not a Superferry issue. It’s a harbor issue,” Ishikawa said.
The Superferry with its new crew was scheduled to arrive on Maui and see how the vessel aligned with rubber fenders from a barge used in the arrival and departure of passenger vehicles.
The rubber fenders were replaced after being damaged in a storm last month.
