'No evidence' dioxin caused by ferries

THERE is no evidence that Sydney's RiverCat ferries are responsible for high dioxin levels in Sydney Harbour, NSW Primary Industries Minister Ian Macdonald said.
A NSW Government document has revealed the catamaran-hulled ferries could have caused the high level of dioxins found in Bream and Prawns in Sydney Harbour with the ferries churning up dioxin-laden sediment on the bed of the Parramatta River.
But Mr Macdonald said today that there was no evidence this was the case.
"The harbour is used by thousands of vessels every day and there is no evidence at all to suggest that any of these vessels are causing high dioxin levels in fish," he said in a statement.
"The high levels of dioxin in sediment in the Harbour system are not the fault of the Rivercats, they are the legacy of a century of industrial pollution."
