Sunday, December 16, 2007 1:36:37 AM Oman Time MUSCAT—The Australia-based ship construction company, Austal, has announced that the construction of Shinas ferry owned by the National Ferry Boats, one of the companies fully owned by the Sultanate’s government, is now completed.
A statement issued by Austal, which won the construction project contract, said that the ferry is the fastest diesel-powered vehicle ever built — about 100km per hour.
The statement also said that the top speed of the ferry recorded is 103.5 km/hr, a record for any diesel-powered vehicle ferry.
During the trial run, the ferry speed recorded 55 knots per hour — more than its standard speed of 52 knots — the fastest for any commercial ferry in the world.
The Sultanate’s government had signed an agreement with the Australia- based Austal to build two ferries (Shinas and Hormuz).
The two ferries will provide the transportation and shipping services between the wilayat of Shinas and Musandam governorate, a distance of about 180km. The two ferries will be delivered by April 2008. The ferries project aims at linking the coastal areas and encouraging internal tourism at the rugged coastal areas.
The 65-metre Shinas ferry accommodates 208 passengers, 56 vehicles including a helicopter landing facility.
