Rochester's Fast Ferry is moving on. NEWS 10NBC has confirmed that the ship is scheduled to leave the Port of Rochester on Monday, April 10th.
City officials remain tight lipped about where the Cat is headed. NEWS 10NBC has learned that there are at least two companies vying for the ship: a Spanish company, Transmed and a British company, Navmed.
The city still isn't saying who's making the buy, but preparations are already underway to allow the boat to leave as soon as the sale goes through. Monday night, we asked Mayor Bob Duffy if he would tell us where the ferry’s headed. He said, “No, that has not been confirmed yet. I was talking with Mr. Richards today. The process is not over yet.”
But the process is underway. City attorney Tom Richards will negotiate the sale of The Cat. The Coast Guard is scheduled to escort the ship out of the harbor, and crewmembers confirm Bayferries has asked them to deliver it.
Tuesday morning, Bay Ferries is scheduled to meet with the Coast Guard to go over details. Sources close to the ferry operation say MTU, the German engine manufacturer, is still performing work in the ferry's engine room, and it's still unclear how that will impact the ship's departure.
We asked Mayor Duffy if that is a factor and he said, “It's one of the issues that's being resolved right now and until we can resolve that, I can't speak to anyone making arrangements.”
The ferry will leave through the Saint Lawrence Seaway. The seaway authority says agents for the sale have asked about fees, but no one has applied for clearance.
As for who the buyer is, John Paul Airs, the president of British company Navmed, says his offer of more than 32 million euros is still on the table. As of Monday Airs tells us he has still not been contacted by the city.
