11-02-2007 17:10 KT to Begin Internet Service for Ferry Passengers By Ryu Jin Staff Reporter www.koreatimes.co.kr/www/news/nation/2007/11/123_13025.html
KT, the country's leading fixed-line and Internet service provider, said Friday that it will begin providing high-speed Internet services for passengers who travel between Busan and Japan’s Osaka on ferries.
KT said in a press release that it will provide the Internet service using the country’s Mugunghwa-5 satellite for passengers of the Panstar Dream of Panstarline.Com Co. from next year after trial, which will run till the end of this year.
This is the first time that Internet services will be provided on a passenger ferry shuttling between the two countries.
KT said people will be able to use the Internet service at a speed of 4Mbps, similar to services provided to the country’s rural areas.
``Deep-sea fishing vessels have so far used Internet services through low-orbit satellites of foreign countries at high rates,’’ a KT spokesman said. ``But this is the first time for a high-speed Internet service to be provided for local ferries. It is also rare around the world.’’
KT is now considers similar services for other ferries shuttling between Korea and China, Russia, Taiwan and the Philippines.
``Some individual customers are asking whether they can use the Internet service on their own yachts,’’ the KT official said. ``We think that the time for people to the Internet at sea without difficulty will come soon.’’
