NEW JOBS PLEDGED AS FIRM EXPANDS By Suzanne Pert
NEW jobs have been promised as an island boat-building firm expands.
The three companies and two separate divisions of South Boats are being consolidated into one company.
The new company, South Boats Special Projects Ltd, is to extend its operations at Medina Shipyard into new premises, which will soon house its moulding operation, currently at Clarence Boatyard in East Cowes.
Ben Colman, sales and operation director, stressed South Boats Special Projects Ltd will be responsible for the three companies' existing business commitments.
The directors of the new company are the same, Clive Jeffery, Rob Stewart and Ben Colman. They have been joined by former FBM Marine's Derek Hughes, who will be production director.
Mr Stewart, who is also a director of Cowes Marine Cluster, said South Boats Special Projects Ltd had 42 employees and 32 sub-contractors working for it. It would be taking on two more staff immediately and probably another three or four in the next couple of weeks, including laminators.
The company was formed in 1998 and has built almost 50 catamarans as well as four monohulls. Clients included the RNLI, Southern Sea Fisheries and the Hampshire and IW Constabulary.
South Boats Ltd and South Marine Mouldings Ltd ceased trading on March 17 and the two companies were wound up. Their assets were transferred into the one company, South Catamarans Ltd, which was re-named South Boats Special Projects Ltd. 31 March 2006
