CotaiJet Service Temporarily Suspended
By Associated Press December 11, 2007 Casino operator Las Vegas Sands Corp. said Tuesday it temporarily suspended ferry service on its new CotaiJet boats while a Macao court reviews a challenge to a government concession allowing the service.
CotaiJet has been running ferries between Hong Kong's Macao Ferry Terminal and Macao's Taipa Temporary Ferry Terminal since Nov. 30.
Stephen Weaver, president of the Asian Region for Las Vegas Sands, said in a statement that the temporary shutdown will not significantly hurt visitation to the Chinese gambling enclave or the company's recently opened Venetian Macao Resort Hotel. However, he noted CotaiJet operations will be hurt when multiple ferries start running throughout the day and evening.
Las Vegas Sands teamed with Hong-Kong based Cotai Chu Kong Shipping Management Services Co. on the ferry service. Cotai Chu Chief Executive Ren Qi Sheng said in a statement that the company, which manages the boats, will keep paying its employees and offer more training so that service can resume quickly when the temporary suspension is lifted.
