NEWS 10NBC HAS uncovered more details about the possible sale of the fast ferry. The bid from a British ferry company has increased and now stands at over $32 million which is more than the City of Rochester paid for the ferry at auction last year. The company, NAVMED, says it is serious about buying the ship. “Clearly the interest has been very, very strong and yes we are in stages of negotiation to sell the fast ferry,” said Duffy.
On Wednesday NEWS 10NBC learned of at least one more company in running. Transmed, an established ferry operator based in Madrid, Spain that runs ferries in the Mediterranean Sea, is negotiating with the city to buy the ferry.
As NEWS 10NBC was first to report last Friday, British ferry company NAVMED is also interested in the ferry. NEWS 10NBC obtained its’ executive summary which says the majority of the ferry company's stock is owned by Chikara Holdings, a company based in Chicago. According to the summary NAVMED intends to buy the Spirit of Ontario, re-name it and run it from Dover, England to Boulogne, France.
In a phone interview on Wednesday NAVMED CEO John Paul Airs said he's increased his bid. “The Rochester people they apparently are going to a blue chip operator and as of this morning I've up our bid.”
Airs says his bid is now more than $32 million. NEWS 10NBC asked him how high he is prepared to go. “We're very serious. We want to get off the ground. If they want to sell us the ship fine, if not we'll go to Incat and buy an Incat ship. My founders have unlimited funds. We have very deep pockets within reason.”
Mayor Duffy cautioned on Wednesday that no matter what the city sells the ferry for the city will have quote "sustained debt for many years to come."
Duffy did say any deal the makes will benefit the city. He says there could be a deal in 10 days to two weeks.
