NEWS 10NBC learned Monday that a British company has made an official offer for the fast ferry and the company wants the ship in Dover, England by the middle of next month. The head of the new ferry company, NAVMED, tells NEWS 10NBC the offer is $30 million, just $2 million less than what the city paid for they ferry last year at auction. NEWS 10NBC has confirmed that the company has signed an initial contract with the city and they are just waiting for the city to sign it. NAVMED wants to start running the Spirit of Ontario across the English Channel by May 1st. “Our interest in the Spirit of Ontario is that we want to purchase the ship with all seriousness. We're ready to close it within this month because we would like the ship to be here in the UK by mid-April,” said NAVMED CEO John Paul Airs.
NAVMED says it will carry people, cars and buses but no trucks. Airs says his company is ready to pay the city with $30 million in cash. “Hopefully the bid we've put in is a realistic bid. It's a bid that I feel is in the right ball park and I'm willing to sit down at the table and sit down with Rochester.”
NEWS 10NBC contacted the city of Rochester for comment about the sale of the ferry. A spokesperson said quote: "The city continues to consider proposals for the sale of the ferry. There will be no comment further until the final agreement is reached, which has not happened."
The ferry can't go anywhere until the St. Lawrence Seaway is open. That happens on Thursday.
