Super Ferry Wins Another Court Battle TheHawaiiChannel.com News 7:23 p.m. HST November 19, 2007
HONOLULU - The Hawaii Super Ferry has won another small battle in court. A Maui judge ruled Monday that vehicles will be permitted to exit the ferry at Kahului harbor much faster than previously allowed.
The Super Ferry was always counting on speed -- getting to Maui quickly and getting hundreds of vehicles off fast so the ferry could load up and leave right away.
Maui residents, however, fought the ferry. Resident said they were afraid too many vehicles coming off all at once would create a traffic nightmare in Kahului. A judge had ruled only two per minute could drive off. But Monday the judge said to bring in trained traffic conductors and get the vehicles off as fast as is practical.
"Instead of two cars per minute trained traffic persons let as many as they feel appropriate and let as many out as they feel necessary," said Michael Formby of the Department of Transportation.
Formby said the people in charge of traffic flow off the ferry will either be DOT personnel, or possibly off-duty Maui police officers. The DOT doesn't want the job.
"What the Department of Transportation prefers is for Super Ferry and its traffic manager to determine how much traffic should be permitted out on the road. So the judge's order today from three -- I mean four -- cops to three persons trained in traffic management," said Formby.
The Super Ferry is still scheduled to resume service to Maui on Dec. 1.
