HAVERSTRAW - Eleven passengers boarded the first New York Water Taxi running from Haverstraw village to Yonkers and lower Manhattan this morning as Rockland to Manhattan ferry service debuted.
With the exception of an unpleasantly surprised woman who thought she had boarded the Haverstraw-Ossining ferry, the riders said they were excited by the new form of public transportation. One commuter disembarked in Yonkers, the first stop, shortly after 7 a.m., while the rest stayed on, bound for offices near the World Financial Center and Wall Street stops.
The ferry from Rockland to Manhattan will take 45 minutes to reach Yonkers, 90 minutes to arrive at the World Financial Center and 102 minutes to dock at Wall Street.
Weekday morning ferries will now depart Haverstraw at 6:15 and 7:05 a.m. For returning commuters, boats will depart from Manhattan's Pier 11 (Wall Street) and the World Financial Center at 5:30 and 6:30 p.m., arriving at Haverstraw Pier at 7:12 and 8:12 p.m., respectively.
The new service is an expansion of New York Water Taxi's existing commuter service between Yonkers and lower Manhattan.
Fares between Haverstraw and Manhattan are $15 one-way, $130 for 10 trips and $450 for 40 trips.
An introductory "Buy One, Get One Free" offer for 10-trip ticket packages is available for a limited time. Riders can buy tickets aboard the ferry and free parking is available next to the Haverstraw Pier, on Dr. Girling Drive.
