South Australia seeks defence business
CANBERRA, Australia, Jan. 30 (UPI) -- South Australia is in a major push to lure shipbuilders and defense contractors to the state and a new maritime precinct now under construction.
The Australian reported Monday talks have been held with naval and commercial shipbuilders, including Austal and Tenix.
The state government has committed $104 million to the new precinct in Adelaide's Osborne area, located next to facilities of the Australian Shipbuilding Corporation, which is owned by the federal government.
ASC has a $4 billion contract to build destroyers for the navy.
Andrew Fletcher, head of a new state organization to oversee development of the precinct, said the state wanted to capitalize on the destroyer contract "so we can ride out the peaks and troughs of these defense projects."
Fletcher said the 74 acre site could be expanded to more than 200 acres to accommodate defense contractors and sub-contractors.
The cities of Sydney, Melbourne and Perth are currently the prime locations for defense-related industries.
