First new navy vessel off slipway
Posted at 6:02pm on 12 Feb 2006
The first vessel in the Government's $500 million navy upgrade has come off its slipway in a Dutch shipbuilding yard.
It will be used to carry troops and cargo, allowing them to be disembarked at sea.
It has been built as part of Project Protector, with seven vessels planned.
Project director Gary Collier says the vessel came off the slip in Rotterdam with no problems, and welding of the decking and living quarters on to the hull will start on Monday.
He says that will be followed by sea trials, with the vessel due in New Zealand by the end of the year.
