ABOUT 80 commuters were stranded for more than four hours when a ferry ran aground in soft mud in the Parramatta River tonight.
The HarbourCat had reportedly swerved to miss a group of rowers when it ran aground. It plunged into the mud at Ermington Bay, west of Homebush Bay, about 4.40pm (AEDT), a Sydney Ferries spokesman said.
"There was a combination of unusual events in terms of a very, very low tide, as low as 20 centimetres," he said.
There were no reported injuries, the spokesman said.
Rescuers were unable to reach the ferry until the tide began to rise once more, about 6.40pm (AEDT).
Food and drink was then shipped over to them until a vessel could begin evacuating.
Taxis and buses were on hand to run the 80 passengers home, the spokesman said.
