Superferry to expand offices
Pacific Business News (Honolulu) - March 1, 2006 pacific.bizjournals.com/
Hawaii Superferry has taken office space at One Waterfront Plaza as it prepares to ramp up employment for 2007 service.
The interisland ferry service venture, whose first ship is under construction at a shipyard in Alabama, has until now operated from a single office at Honolulu Harbor's Pier 19 ferry terminal.
The new headquarters office at One Waterfront, owned and operated by The Shidler Group, will house the operations, marketing and sales, finance, human resources and technology departments, the company said Tuesday. The increased office space will accommodate personnel growth expected over the next year to reach approximately 50 to 60 management staff, as the company prepares for the start of operations.
Superferry has gotten private funding from J.F. Lehman and Co., as well as investment from Hawaii, Mainland and international sources. The corporate plan calls for one ship in service by early 2007 and a second by 2009.
There has been opposition to Superferry, especially on Maui and Kauai, which has spotlighted worries of inadequate harbor capacity, especially in Kahului, and others have expressed concern about ferries hitting whales. The company repeated Tuesday that it is committed to protecting Hawaii's environment and intends to meet or exceed environmental standards.
