HRM to try out speedy ferry Last Updated Apr 12 2005 09:18 AM ADT CBC News www.cbc.ca/HALIFAX – A fast ferry could be in Bedford Basin next month for a test run. Since the transportation plan for the Halifax Regional Municipality calls for fast ferries, municipal planners want to test one out soon. Transportation planner David McCusker is recommending a study to look into the economics of running a speedy ferry service, and that would involve chartering a special one from Massachusetts. "We measure the other harbour users just to show that these fast ferries, travelling at their operating speed, are not any more of an impact in terms of wake than the vessels that are out there today," he said. McCusker hopes to arrange the testing for early May. If that doesn't work out, the experiment will have to be done in October after the peak ferry season in New England. Bringing the ferry to Halifax for the tests will give council a better idea of what a fast ferry service here would look like, he added. "This is really a completely different thing in terms of the service it provides and the comfort. And they're very quiet and very fast. They're really a nice way to move around." The study would cost $210,000, with half of the bill covered by the federal and provincial governments. Planners are recommending that TDV Global be awarded the job. Regional council will consider the proposal Tuesday. @@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@ FerryFast Link: Halifax Regional Municipality Transit Department www.halifax.ca/metrotransit/index.asp
