Thursday, May 26, 2005 Ferry terminal options narrowed Port Townsend Leader www.ptleader.com/Two options have stood out as most likely for the $35 million revamp of the city's ferry terminal, Washington State Ferries Terminal Engineering Director Russell East explained Monday. However, all four options that were displayed during a March 31 open house at Fort Worden State Park Commons are still being considered. He said the two alternatives that would be the best fit for both the ferry system and the city would involve lengthening the current slips between 120 to 220 feet offshore as well as expanding the vehicle holding areas on land. Both would require the relocation of Rotary Club Park next to U.S. Bank. Funded by state gas tax dollars, the project is planned to repair the terminal's ailing infrastructure and fit it to receive larger ferries, as well as expand the holding area to have enough space for 300 vehicles. The current holding area has enough space for 200. Repairing the ferry terminal structure will cost about $22 million, while expanding the holding area will cost about $13 million, East said. Construction is projected to be completed by 2011. The proposals for the ferry terminal project can be viewed online at www.wsdot.wa.gov/ferries/projects/pttownpreserv. East said options "B" and "C" would most likely be the best fit.
