High winds spawn power outages, commute troubles
January 18, 2006, 11:21 PM EST
TRENTON, N.J. (AP) _ High winds and driving rain left more than 140,000 Garden State customers without power for a time Wednesday and made for a harrowing morning commute.
Power was restored quickly to most, but by 11 p.m. about 3,200 Public Service Electric & Gas customers were still without electricity, a company spokesman said.
The storm hit around 5 a.m., bringing wind gusts of more than 50 mph and heavy rain into the early afternoon.
The storm disrupted the morning commute for many. A tractor-trailer flipped on the George Washington Bridge and a New York Waterway ferry running from Monmouth County to the southern tip of Manhattan reported some trouble after being hit by waves, said spokesman Pat Smith.
Waves reached the passenger deck and prompted a rush for the life preservers.
"When it first flooded the front of the boat, everybody thought it was going to sink," said passenger Robert Steele. But the boat arrived safely and no one was injured.
At the height of the storm, flight delays of more than 90 minutes were reported at Newark Liberty International Airport.
No deaths or serious injuries were reported in New Jersey, but elsewhere the storm was blamed for two deaths, one in New York and one in Massachusetts, when trees fell on cars.
