AUSTRALIA wants to be seen not just as a land of "cricket and kangaroos" but a viable trade and investment partner to Trinidad and Tobago, said Australian High Commissioner John Michell.
He was speaking yesterday to form five and upper six pupils at the Bishop Anstey High School, Port of Spain as part of the school's "Reach for the Sky" programme.
He said that in light of Trinidad's skill sector shortage, there was a requirement for investment partners and Australia was a "good choice".
Michell said Australia is currently ranked as the 13th most developed country in the world and has the fastest-growing economy in the developed world over the past five years.
Michell said that, similar to Trinidad, Australia desires a global, rules-based trading regime and because it produces more than it consumes, it is a trade orientated country.
Australia's main exports are minerals, wheat, meat and wine.
Trinidad could also benefit from the Australia's technological sophistication, Michell said, adding that both the Cat and Lynx fast ferries were Australian vessels built with Australian technology.
He said that Australia could also assist Trinidad in development and implementation of Vision 2020 as his country had expertise in building economic models.
Some of the benefits to having Trinidad as a trade partner include this country's energy sector, with BHP Billiton already operating here.
He said that Trinidad was a suitable place for Australian companies to base themselves, further noting that people from the two countries had much in common, including their love for sport, and fun-loving attitudes.
"Australians, like Trinidadians, work to live, not live to work," he said.
He noted that Trinidad and Tobago was developing its Sports Commission based on an Australian model, which helped the land down under increase its Olympic medal haul.
