Marine highways won't be buying any more fast ferries

State officials say Alaska won't be buying any more fast ferries. And the Marine Highway System says it plans to tie up its two fast ferries -- the Fairweather and Chenega -- next winter.
State officials say the decision follows a failed winter experiment in Southeast Alaska.
Marine Highway officials say the fast ferries cost too much to run, and attract too few off-season riders.
They also say they suck too many logs into their engines and are vulnerable to damage in heavy seas.
The state will continue to sail its fast ferries from about mid-April to about mid-September.
Taylor says the Fairweather will continue connecting Juneau, Haines, Skagway and Sitka. And the Chenega will continue to connect Whittier, Valdez and Cordova.
