Austal Congratulates North Star Cruises On Winning National Tourism Award
3 March 2006
"True North" Operator awarded top honours in Adventure Tourism Category.
Austal congratulates North Star Cruises Australia on taking out the coveted Adventure Tourism category at the Australian National Tourism Awards, held on February 24.
The Kimberley's longest established adventure-cruise operator and undisputed market leader, North Star operate the Austal built vessel “True North” arguably the worlds best live-aboard adventure-cruise vessel.
The award follows recent honors for exporting and a big night at the West Australian Tourism Awards where the company was voted best performer in three categories.
In accepting the award, North Star Director Craig Howson said that it was easy to see why the company was so successful:
“We have the best adventure-cruise ship in the world, the best crew in the world and our program includes some of the best wilderness destinations in the world such as the Ningaloo Reef, the Rowley Shoals, the Great Barrier Reef and Papua New Guinea.”
The 50 metre, 36 passenger “True North” was delivered to North Star Cruises in February 2005. Featuring the best in comfort and style, “True North” was purpose built for accessing shallow river systems and offers several lavish vantage points including a sundeck, an observation lounge and a ship’s lounge/bar.
Multiple expedition tenders take passengers away in small groups to experience wilderness ‘up close’ and, to add yet another dimension to adventure, “True North” is the only Kimberley vessel that features an onboard helicopter.
The 36 berth aluminium monohull has four cabins available in three configurations – upper deck staterooms, middle deck doubles and lower deck twins. All cabins feature en-suites, enhanced décor, satellite telephones and in-cabin entertainment.
With the growing popularity of live-aboard and dive charter expeditions worldwide, Austal has quietly been carving a niche in the development of custom designed vessels for this live-aboard or “mini-cruise” market.
Austal Sales Manager, Mark Stothard, explained that Austal is one of the few shipbuilding companies focusing strongly on this exciting sector of the marine tourism industry:
“We have invested a great deal of time in developing this market and based on extensive experience in this area and valued input from operators, we are able to design and customise vessels to ideally suit the requirements of a live-aboard charter operation.”
“True North is a perfect example of this - a well constructed vessel providing the perfect blend of luxury and adventure. This truly unique product offers its customers the holiday experience of a lifetime,” he said.
From fast ferries to patrol boats and luxury cruises, Austal is one of Australia’s most capable and respected builders of high quality aluminium vessels. Since commencing operations in 1988, Austal has delivered in excess of 25 cruise vessels for private and commercial owners throughout Australasia, the Pacific, Africa and the USA. Austal is currently leading the development of the tourism sector and through recently secured contracts, is building two new vessels of 37 and 58 metre in this category for delivery in 2006.
