Snowe: Winter 'In Sync' With Maine On Shipbuilding Strategy
POSTED: 5:35 am EST January 20, 2006 UPDATED: 10:57 am EST January 20, 2006
BATH, Maine -- U.S. Sen. Olympia Snowe said she and the Navy's top brass are now "in sync" when it comes to future shipbuilding needs.
Snowe made her remarks Friday as newly-installed Navy Secretary Donald Winter visited Maine to see the Brunswick Naval Air Station, Bath Iron Works and Portsmouth Naval Shipyard. It's no secret that Snowe butted heads with Winter's predecessor, Gordon England.
England caused concern in Maine about statements he made suggesting he was willing to sacrifice Bath Iron Works in order to save money for the Pentagon. He further raised ire when he backed the Pentagon's proposal to close Portsmouth Naval Shipyard.
Snowe put a hold on England's nomination to deputy defense secretary, but President George W. Bush bypassed the Senate for a recess appointment. Winter, who began his new post on Jan. 3, is pushing to increase the size of the Navy's fleet, which has dropped below 300.
