For the first time since it shut down service last September, news 10nbc got inside the fast ferry Wednesday and also found out new information about the ferry's repair schedule.
NEWS 10NBC has learned The Cat will leave for Saint Catherines, Ontario at 2:00 a.m. Monday. The ferry is booked at Port Weller dry dock in Saint Catherines all next week where it will undergo repairs.
NEWS 10NBC also learned that the terminal managers in Rochester and Toronto are training in Bar Harbor Maine which is where the ferry’s operators, Bay Ferries, has other high speed ferry docks.
On Wednesday NEWS 10NBC joined a group of international tourism writers and directors from 11 different countries, including Turkey, Argentina and Romania on a tour of the ferry. “This has just been a great opportunity because what our goal was to show 16 international visitors who all know what New York City is, is how easy it is to get from New York City to other parts of New York State and specifically the Finger Lakes and Niagara Falls,” said Sally Berry from the Finger Lake Tourism.
The tour took them from the bridge, to the car deck to the panoramic deck at the front of the ferry. That is where Bay Ferries Vice President Don Cormier told the tour that Bay Ferries was advised to turn that part of the ferry into an exclusive area where only certain ticket holders could go. Bay Ferries says it rejected that idea saying the front and its view is an essential part of the ferry experience.
From their tour experience tourism officials hope the writers go home and rave about the cat.
“I think it's important to inform people of such an opportunity that if someone comes to Rochester they must know he's able to use this ferry,” said Alexey Pelevin, tourism writer from Moscow.
“You can fly cheaper from Denmark to Toronto and then you can take the ferry to NY and fly back from New York,” said Lona Arensen, tourism writer from Denmark.
The ferry is scheduled to launch service June 17th.
