The Middle East's biggest ever agreement for marine diesel engines - worth about AED 20 million - has been signed during the first day of this week's Dubai International Boat Show.
United Arab Emirates: Tuesday, March 14 - 2006 at 14:19 GMT+4
Gulf Craft Inc, the leading builder of super-luxury yachts, has ordered 70 engines from Mohamed AbdulRahman Al Bahar, the Caterpillar dealers for all GCC countries except Saudi Arabia.
'This is the biggest marine order in our history here,'
says Surendra Shankar, Al Bahar's marine sales specialist.
'Gulf Craft is already our biggest single customer in the region and has doubled its orders every year for the past three years.'
The engines will be installed across the range of Gulf Craft's Majesty Yachts series being built between now and the end of the year.
About 60 will drive the mid-size Majesty Yachts models, ranging from 500 to 1,000 horse-power. The super-yachts will take 10 high-performance units of 1,400 to 1,825 hp.
All are twin-prop, with the smaller versions being 6 in-line configuration and the bigger units V12.
Erwin Bamps, executive manager of Gulf Craft, described the deal as indicative of the company's rapid growth and the demand for Majesty Yachts across the full spectrum of sizes from 44 feet overall length to 130 feet.
'Caterpillar is a recognised leader in marine diesel engineering and the brand is a big selling point with our international customers,' he said. 'Export sales account for about 70 per cent of our production and having Caterpillar engines installed is in keeping with the reputation Gulf Craft has established in international markets for being leaders in design, luxury, and performance.'
