Mayor says ferry on track, but former 'tenant' skeptical
ROCHESTER, N,Y. The mayor of Rochester says there should be an announcement soon on when the city-owned fast ferry will resume service to Toronto.
Mayor William Johnson tells Rochester's W-R-O-C T-V that the city is still expecting to relaunch the "Spirit of Ontario" by Memorial Day weekend. But before that can happen, repairs need to be made to the ship's engines and to several gashes in the hull.
The mayor says an announcement on a start date and ticket sales will come by April 15th.
Some people are skeptical that the ferry will be back in service by the end of May. They include the man who has spent the last six months living aboard the ship.
Bob Mansfield worked for the Australian company that built the ship, then worked for the ferry's original owners. After the owners ran out of money and halted service, Mansfield moved aboard the ship, which is docked in Rochester.
Before leaving for Australia today, Mansfield says he doubts the city can get the ship back in service before Memorial Day.
