Date: Monday, August 6, 2012, 6:14am CDT! The Associated Press reported that the Senate Appropriations Committee has approved $1.78 billion for four littoral combat ships, two of which will be built by Austal USA in Mobile, in addition to approving $189 million for one joint high speed vessel to be built by Austal for the fiscal year 2013 budget.
According to the Press-Register, Marinette Marine of Marinette, Wisconsin, will build the remaining two LCS, following the U.S. Navy's commitment to buy 20 of the advanced combat ships – 10 from Austal and 10 from Marinette Marine.
Austal spokesman Craig Hooper said the company expects the contract for the two LCS will be awarded in the first half of 2013, with the ships delivered sometime around 2016 and 2017.
