Austal, an Australia-based international defense contractor and vessel maker, has put expansion works on its Balamban shipyard in Cebu in full throttle with a view to complete it within 18 months as it gears up for support orders from the US Navy.
Established in 2011, the company is preparing for the second phase of its expansion in the Philippines that will include the hiring of 1,000 more employees to operate the Balamban facility.
According to Austal, its Philippine shipyard is supported by its major offices in Singapore as well as the Australian cities of Perth, Western Australia and Darwin, Northern Territory.
“Austal’s Philippine shipyard provides full shipyard facilities, including design and production expertise,” Austal said.
Austal also said the local shipyard will produce this year the latest of its Wind Express series of vessels, the Wind Express Trimaran.
The company delivered its first trimaran to the United States in 2005.
To date, Austal has a 35 percent market share in sales of high-speed ferries.
Austal was founded in 1988 and listed its stock on the Australia Stock Exchange in 1998. It has its main offices in Australia, and has offices in Asia, the United States, Europe, Caribbean, and the Middle East. The company has three shipyards, one of which is in Balamban, Cebu. The other two are Western Australia and in Mobile, Alabama.
According to Austal, the Balamban office has 115 employees.
As of June 2012, the company had delivered 248 vessels internationally.
As a global defense prime contractor, Austal designs, builds and maintains revolutionary platforms such as the Littoral Combat Ship (LCS) and the Joint High-Speed Vessel (JHSV) for the US Navy.
Austal’s product range includes passenger and vehicle-passenger ferries, patrol boats, theatre support vessels, combat ships, multi-role vessels and luxury private live-aboard yachts.
Austal also designs, installs, integrates and maintains sophisticated communications, radar and command and control systems.
Austal claims to be a world leader in the design and construction of customized aluminum defense and commercial vessels, and counts among its customers many of the world’s leading ferry operators and defense forces.
In addition, Austal is an established provider of worldwide vessel maintenance and management services.
