Fast ferry service users double

MUSCAT The total number of passengers using fast ferries in the first half of the year reached 13,930 passengers, compared to 6,826 passengers for the same period last year, according to statistical data from the Communications and Booking Office affiliated to the National Ferries Company. A total of 2,168 vehicles were shipped on board the ferries.
A total of 2,931 passengers and 634 vehicles were transported between Shinas Port in Northern Al-Batinah Governorate and Khasab Port in Musandam Governorate in the first half of the year. The National Ferries Company also received the Middle East Tourist Award for its distinguished services in maritime transportation.
The company made achievements in terms of social responsibility, meeting requirements and standards of maritime environment preservation, boosting regional development by taking services to small coastal residential complexes and providing job opportunities to Omani youth, and achieving Omanisation percentage in all administrative and technical jobs. The company fulfilled operational safety standards. The increase in bookings for passengers and vehicle shipment demonstrates the confidence of nationals, residents and tourists in the quality of services provided by the company, said Ghazi Abdullah Bin Abdullah Al Zedjali, marketing and communications manager at National Ferries Company.
The company has announced an international tender for a feasibility study on operating ferries from Omani ports to neighbouring ports under the Ishiq Abad Agreement, Al Zedjali said. The Tender Board also gave consent to award the project of designing and building two ferries for the Shannah-Masirah route in Al Sharqiyah Governorate.
The National Ferries Company is operating 16 trips per week through four local ports — Sultan Qaboos Port, Shinas Port, Khasab Port and Lima Port. The fast ferries service will cover 14 local ports across the Sultanate.
