(MOBILE, Ala.) - For more than six years, Mobile has watched Austal USA's riverfront complex grow, beginning with one solitary assembly bay to today's sprawling Module Manufacturing Facility.
And on Friday, that module manufacturing facility will officially grow again, along with the dedication of another assembly bay, and Austal USA's new contemporary office complex.
The new building will bring the defense contractor's scattered technical personnel together under one roof.
"It represents the future," said Austal's Craig Hooper. "It represents Austal actually moving to be a mature shipyard."
Every new desk, every cubicle represents progress and permanence for Austal in Mobile.
But they also represent something else.
Each represents a high tech, good paying job.
Brian Leathers is Austal USA's new interim president.
As a native of Pensacola and a resident of Clarke County, Alabama, he's especially excited about Friday's dedications.
He says they offer assurance to Mobile and the Gulf Coast that Austal USA is here to stay.
"We are here for real," he said, "for the long term, meeting the needs of the Navy, or the war fighter, for many years to come."
The new three story office complex on Blakeley Island offers more than 110 thousand square feet of office space, will house 450 employees and is five times the size of Austal's current two story office building.
And beyond it's contemporary office grid, it features an open second story veranda overlooking a retention pond that has been converted into a park-like space, complete with a walking course.
It is the new face of Austal USA. One as contemporary as the vessels it exists to build.
