Just in time for summer, commuters will again have speedy, passenger-only ferry service between Bremerton and Seattle.
The Rich Passage 1, a brand new catamaran, will make the trip in 35 minutes, about half the time it takes on a larger Washington state ferry. The ferry will make two round trips in the morning and two during the afternoon commute.
But this is only a five-month test.
Kitsap Transit is operating the ferry through October to research how the vessel's wake affects beaches along Rich Passage. In 2003, the state ferry system quit running passenger-only ferries after shoreline property owners there sued the state over erosion caused by waves from the faster boats. The state's vessels had to slow down, which defeated the purpose and made the service costlier to run.
