The first big step in linking the Port of Khasab with ports in Iran via fast ferries has been taken by the National Ferries Company (NFC). The company has invited interested parties to submit their bids for a tender related to 'Feasibility study of fast ferry services linking Omani ports to international destinations within the Ashgabat Convention'.
The last date for collection of documents is June 9, while the deadline for submission of tender is July 2. Ghazi Abdullah al Zedjali, the head of marketing and communication, NFC, told Muscat Daily that a team from NFC visited Iran in 2010 to look into available infrastructure on the other side.
"The study will look into the feasibility of a ferry link, mainly between Bandar Abbas and Chabahar in Iran and Khasab in the sultanate."
To facilitate quick and efficient movement of goods and passengers between the countries of Middle Asia and the ports of the Arabian Gulf and the Sea of Oman, the sultanate signed an agreement called Ashgabat Convention in 2011 with Iran, Qatar, Turkmenistan, and Uzbekistan to establish an international transport and transit corridor.
Under the agreement, the movement of goods and passengers will be undertaken by various modes of transportation (land or sea) through the national territories of the contracting parties.
NFC, however, has been tasked by the Ministry of Transport and Communication to take care of the fast ferry sea link between Khasab and Iran.
