The Halifax Shipyard is being swamped with job applications since it was awarded a $25-billion contract to build build 21 Canadian combat ships.
The Irving-owned shipyard also still needs certain types of tradespeople right away to complete the ships it is currently refitting for the Royal Canadian Navy.
Irving spokeswoman Mary Keith said the company has been advertising for workers since the Halifax Shipyard won the contract to build destroyers, frigates and Arctic offshore patrol ships over the next 30 years.
"Since the 19th of October, we have had some ads running for various positions out west, in the western daily newspapers, as well as some of the papers closer to home," she said.
"We've had about 2,000 applications that have come in. So, over the last couple of weeks we would have made offers to approximately 50 people. Electricians would be one of those where we do have a need at the moment."
In addition to those offers, Halifax Shipbuilding has rehired about 20 people and taken on another nine apprentices from the Nova Scotia Community College.
The total number of resumes on file at the Halifax Shipyard now stands at 12,000. Construction of the first ship to be built under the national shipbuilding program is still well over a year away.
