ABU DHABI - Western Australia, which is Australia’s largest food grain producing state, is seeking an increase in the investments into its farm sector, so as to meet the future demands of the UAE’s growing population.
Western Australia’s Premier Colin Barnett, who is on a business mission, has stressed upon the need for “investment flow to secure food supply chain.”
“With 80 per cent of its agricultural produce exported, we are urging a substantial scale-up in governmental and private equity investment in food securities to meet the future demands of UAE’s growing population,” said Colin Barnett, while speaking to more than 250-members of Australian Business Group in Abu Dhabi.
Shaikha Lubna Al Qasimi, Minister for Foreign Trade was the chief guest on the occasion.
The Premier said that the UAE is already Western Australia’s tenth largest market for food products with exports worth $127 million in 2010, and enjoys the position of the largest market for livestock and the second largest for meat products.
“With 25 per cent annual increase in Western Australia’s exports to UAE and 49 per cent increase in imports from the UAE, in the last five years, Western Australia has a significant stake in the bilateral trade relations between Australia and the UAE,” said the Premier.
Barnett said that his state contributes more than half of the Australia’s total trade with the UAE valuing $2.3 billion.
The Western Australia presents exciting opportunities for Emirati investment, as its exports exceed $95 billion in 2010 and investment projects worth more $200 billion currently underway or being considered, he said.
Barnett stressed on the need of joint cooperation in a variety of economic sectors.
“We are also seeking enhanced strategic partnerships in diverse sectors like the oil & gas, mining, marine, consulting services, infrastructure planning and engineering, agribusiness, tourism, research, education and vocation training programmes.”
“Additionally, collective initiatives can be targeted at taking advantage of the business opportunities around the Indian Ocean Rim which has been identified as an area of great economic potential,” added Barnett.
“Earlier, Barnett inaugurated the UAE office of Austal, Western Australia’s globally successful defense and commercial ship builder, in Dubai.
Austal has enjoyed immense commercial success in the Middle East for the last ten years, both as a builder of world-class vessels and provider of maintenance services.
In the UAE, Dubai based Western Australian Trade Office–Middle East & Africa is mandated to nurture growth in exports to the MENA region with a focus on the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) countries.
“Our charter is to promote trade and encourage investments both from the region to Western Australia and vice versa,” said Pankaj Savara Regional Director and Trade Commissioner.
