MOBILE, Ala. -- General Electric will provide two LM2500 aeroderivative gas turbines for Austal USA's next littoral combat ship, the Jackson, GE officials announced this week.
The LM2500 engines have been used in both littoral combat ships built in Austal's Mobile River shipyard.
Those ships were both bought from General Dynamics, with Austal serving as a subcontractor. For the Jackson and nine subsequent ships, Austal will be acting as the prime contractor.
The U.S. Navy gave it a $3.6 billion contract for the 10 ships in December.
The LM2500 is GE's most popular gas turbine, used by 31 navies worldwide, and with more than 2,500 engines operating in both marine and industrial applications.
The engines for the Jackson will be manufactured at GE's Evendale, Ohio, facility, and will be delivered to Austal in May 2012.
