HamiltonJet hopes for big jet orders
Alan Wood - The Press | Thursday, 21 February 2008
Specialist project: HamiltonJet fitter Neil Harrison tightens the astern deflector bracket on one of the first two HT1000 waterjets at the firm's Christchurch factory.
Christchurch's HamiltonJet has designed super-sized marine jet units for the South Korean Coast Guard.
The firm hopes for orders of over $15 million will flow from the special project.
CWF Hamilton & Co publicity officer Tony Kean said yesterday the first pair of HamiltonJet model HT1000 waterjets had left the Christchurch factory.
The jets, each weighing eight tonnes with a jet diameter of 1.2m, were the culmination of two years of design and building.
Because of the scale of the units, some of the work for the project has been outsourced, Kean said.
Kean said the model HT1000 water jets had been designed specifically for a new fleet of 58-metre patrol vessels used by the South Korean Coast Guard.
The initial order was for sets of water jets to equip four ships, and this could be followed for orders for about another eight ships giving total revenues of $15m plus.
To complete the project HamiltonJet was working with South Korean boat builders -- Hanjin Heavy Industries Corp and Daewoo Industries.
HamiltonJet was also investigating other opportunities for the HT series waterjets, such as in supply vessels for the offshore oil industry, fast passenger ferries and other patrol boat fleets.
The company was probably having its best export year ever, with a pretty much full order book for 2008 and orders well into 2009, Kean said.
Because of a shortage of skilled workers, CWF Hamilton was actively recruiting staff in the United Kingdom.
The company exports more than 95 per cent of its product. In recent years the company has sold marine jets to the United States Navy, the United States Coast Guard, and the British military.
CWF Hamilton employs about 330 people at its sites in Lunns Road and Waterloo Road.
