Ferry to still run in May, Rochester officials say By JENNIFER LEWINGTON www.globeandmail.com/Tuesday, March 22, 2005 Updated at 2:40 PM EST A relaunch of the high-speed ferry from Rochester, N.Y., is still on for late May, Rochester city officials said yesterday, despite a new snag on repair costs. "We are committed to stay on schedule," said Rochester city councillor Ben Douglas, president of the city-owned ferry company that purchased the $32-million vessel this month. In a telephone interview, Mr. Douglas said that city officials now are in negotiations with a German manufacturer over who will pay for an estimated $1-million (U.S.) in recommended upgrades to the ferry's four diesel engines as well as other repairs. The ferry, known as the Spirit of Ontario, ran for 11 weeks last year between Rochester and Toronto before the private operators ran into financial difficulty. Meanwhile, the Toronto Port Authority is expected to complete work on a new terminal for the ferry by late May.
