Cruise Ship Cancels Season, Blames Mold At Portland Terminal UPDATED: 2:33 pm EDT April 6, 2005 WMTW-TV www.wmtw.com/PORTLAND, Maine -- The operator of the Scotia Prince is blaming the city of Portland for its decision to cancel ferry service this summer between Portland and Yarmouth, Nova Scotia. The ship was to resume its 35-year run within a few weeks, but workers were notified Tuesday that it's not going to happen. Spokesman Mark Hudson Wednesday blamed the city for failing to effectively deal with toxic mold that sickened workers in the city-owned International Marine Terminal. He said that nothing has been done to stop leaks that caused the mold to grow. Hudson said millions of dollars were spent on marketing for this summer, but he said it was a relatively easy decision to cancel the season. He said there was no way that the company was going to compromise the health of passengers and employees. The city will have its own statement later Wednesday afternoon. Meanwhile, tourism officials said they're stunned by the development. As for the Scotia Prince, it's in drydock. Hudson said it's probably too late to come up with another route for this summer. Will “The Cat” Move In? The decision by the Scotia Prince to cancel their season raises the question of whether the high-speed ferry known as The Cat will begin service from Portland to Nova Scotia this summer. A spokeperson for The Cat was not available for comment Wednesday
