Washington State Ferries plans to roll out the online ticketing system, Wave2Go, in Anacortes and the San Juan Islands beginning in late October and continuing through December.
Wave2Go allows ferry riders to purchase tickets online and preprint tickets at home. Frequent users can sign up for ReValue, where they can automatically purchase a new multi-ride card when they have used up their existing rides.
At the Sept. 14 Ferry Advisory Committee meeting, Susan Harris-Huether, WSF customer information manager, said the program will be brought in slowly. She said the program has been running well on the Port Townsend/Keystone route, the first route to get Wave2Go.
• Olympic Cascade, the concessionaire that operates the galleys on the Anacortes/San Juan Islands routes, hopes to keep the galleys open year-round. Olympic Cascade Concessions is waiting for word from the Inland Boatman’s Union on contract provisions, such as flexibility with operating hours and shifts. If the two parties cannot come to terms, the galleys will close at the end of September. Comments regarding food service can be submitted to boatfood@yahoo.com.
• Thanks to a half-price discount for oversize vehicles going to Sidney, British Columbia, ridership in that area has increased 64.1 percent over last year.
• During the fiscal year 2006 fourth quarter, one trip of 110 to Sidney was missed due to the breakdown of the Elwha. Of the 5,934 trips between Anacortes and the San Juan Islands, 26 trips were missed and 11 were replaced.
The Elwha is at the Dakota Creek Industries shipyard for refurbishment. On April 7, the Elwha suffered a drive motor problem, damaging parts of the boat. The 144-car ferry was originally scheduled for a major maintenance interval, from October until February 2007, for a new paint job, propulsion control system and other refurbishment.
The vessel did not run during the summer, allowing some of the work planned for next fall to be completed early. The vessel is not planned to be available for service until February 2007.
• The fall sailing schedule was effective beginning Sunday, Sept. 17 and runs through Jan. 6, 2007. One daily sailing to Sidney will be offered with the fall schedule. There will be no Sidney run from Jan. 6-April 1, 2007.
